Default Londonderry 1972

Yesterday's Daily Mail suggests that there could be a number of murder charges brought against former members of the Parachute Regiment later this month, as a result of their actions in Londonderry some forty seven years ago now.
The former Paratroopers face allegations ranging from perjury to murder, although, it is suggested that only four are most at risk to be actually charged with murder.

This may be of some interest.

Unfortunately it doesn't deal with the Bloody Sunday incident but does have some interesting facts and figures.

It is suggested that any charges will be brought after the 14th of March by prosecutors in Northern Ireland.

Interestingly, the MOD have now stated that the seventeen former paratrooper's legal fees, which may result if prosecutors decide to proceed tomorrow, will be paid by the MOD.
Meanwhile, Lord Saville has announced that prosecutions are "not" the aim of the inquiry into Bloody Sunday.

Yes indeed, if proceedings actually go ahead, the former paratroopers will be represented entirely at the expense of the MOD.

Looks like one ex-soldier to be prosecuted for murder & attempted murder.
But look on the bright side - at least it's been decided not to bring any charges against the two official IRA men.

Presumably because there is insufficient evidence to do so!

Dave.

The Saville inquiry cost £200 million and now 1 soldier faces murder charges for actions taken "in the heat of a riot".

Yet at the same time the families of three young Scottish soldiers , murdered in cold blood in Belfast in 1971 , are having to rely on charitable donations to get any form of justice.

I am lost for words........no other country and I have lived in a few would constantly look for reasons to put itself on trial, beat it self up, or search for things to apologise for which happened in its long history.
I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision moving to Greece, watching the news today, begging Europe for crubs followed by news of a 70 odd year old Para being charged convinces me I have.
I was a prosecutor for 20 years with the CPS and I was continually appalled by people we chased to the ends of the earth for committing one mistake yet the hardened, evil career criminals that made everyone's life miserable were slapped on the wrist and let off to continue.
Apologies rant over!

Absolutely disgusting! Soldiers should be honoured. Fighting terrorists(that is what the IRA were)should be praised not prosecuted! I thought that this nonsense only happened in third world countries. Obviously not. When they are finished with this why not arrest Prince Andrew and all the rest who fought in the Falklands and then give it to Argentina. It makes the same type of sense. Rant over.

Our government is a disgrace. What annoys me is, when serving we were treated like 3rd class citizens.
