Default Royal Norfolk Regiment 1937

Hi,

I was wondering what Cap Badge a soldier of the 1st Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment would have worn in 1937?

Thanks

Conor

Hi Conor,

It depends when in 1937. Although they became "Royal" in 1935 the new badge was not sealed until the 21st of April 1937.

So depending on when, either of the below.

Could of course differ slightly if your man was a hoffisah or WO.

Thanks for the interest.

Researching Pte Isaac Roberts, killed with the 1st Battalion on the North West Frontier, 1st September 1937.

Conor,

I think you can be fairly sure that he would only have worn the full wreath pattern. I suspect that his day-to-day headdress in India was a Foreign Service Helmet and he would not have worn a badge in that. Neither do the Norfolks have a coloured pagri cloth flash in any 1930s photo that I can find.

As the lone Britannia badge was not sealed until 1937 by the time the new badges were produced and sent to the Battalion in India, I suspect your man was deceased.

There had been a bespoke pagri badge worn by the Norfolks http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...mid=695&page=2 but I believe that it was not likely to have been in use in the late 1930s.

This shows the Bn in FSH in 1932 in China and no badges can be seen. http://rushenhistory.com/page11.htm
Same in India in 1933 https://www.flickr.com/photos/brianh...ier/2307716089

With reference to the pagri flash, the only dated image that I can find at the moment is in "Britain in Old Photographs The Royal Norfolk Regiment" by Neil R. Storey. Page 104 shows a kit lay out belonging to the 2nd Battalion whilst in Gibraltar (1937-39) which shows the Foreign Service Helmet with coloured flash. I am not sure if I can copy it, so wont, but I do have the images below to assist. I suspect that they are earlier than 1937 and I don't know were the coloured picture comes from as it was given to me with some other pictures, all Norfolk Regiment related.

I hope this helps,

Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for this info Andy. Think I'm gonna go with the cap badge. It's for display with his medal so it will be easier to see the Regiment.
