A nice collection you have there. The belt looks well loved which makes me think it is both old and genuine.

Just as Coldstream Guardsmen polished away all sign of the centre of the Order of the Garter on their Cap Stars (a far worse 'defacement' some might say), Mick Guardsmen (with a few years service) in about 1999) polished away the outer detail on their stars.
Cap Stars were not allowed to be polished so much that the crowns on the shamrock were missing - so this was the next best thing. I recall most of Support Company, certainly the Recce Platoon had stars like this between 2000 and 2002.

If it was buffed down equally all over it might of looked ok, but as it is it looks incomplete and worthless. My opinion only.

Or you could take it to the excellent REME Armourer. , who for a pack of biscuits or teabags could turn a brand new cap star or badge into one that looks 30 years old using his buffing wheel. The trick is to make it look flat from a distance but on closer inspection most the major details are visible.
