Default REME Badge

Has anyone any information on this variant of the WWII REME cap badge? They don't usually have the shield with the red cross on it within the calipers.

It has been suggested that the red cross could have been for the 8th Army. Apparently the cross was red for a year before it changed to a yellow cross. That is not an area of militaria that I know much about, so I will leave it up to those more knowledgeable in that field than me.
