Lt Col R Montgomery
I am very late in posting this but feel this is a life worth commemorating. There are so few of these originals left. I met Lt Col Montgomery at a reunion in St Nazaire - he created a great impression.

Many thanks for the link. I note it says James (Jim) Dorian was interviewed about Lt Col Montgomery. Jim was at the same reunion in St Nazaire that I was lucky enough to attend, and left a copy of his comprehensive book 'Storming St Nazaire' on a table at the reception, with a request for veterans to sign it - What a great memento he achieved, of a highly memorable occasion.
It was at the remembrance service held earlier that I noticed a veteran wearing a Military Medal - I tactfully asked him about it. He said - oh that, I won it for running around and sitting down - We ran around in training, sat down while we made our way to St Nazaire, did a lot of running around when we got there, had to do a lot of sitting down when captured, then I did a lot of running around after I escaped.... He made a home run, hence the MM. Typically understated humour of these exceptional men! |
