Default And i thought SAS wings was a minefield

Outstanding thread. THanks for awesome information.
The rears of all the wings seem so different.
Happy collecting

There are only a few patterns/versions of the SF Wing that can be 100% guaranteed as being WW2 originals. There are several variations of field-theater made examples, but they are very difficult to authenticate, unless there is cast-iron history and provenance. On top of this there are many fakes-replicas-reproductions, just to confuse matters further. I am sure this is much the same with many other Insignia's, handling and seeing examples or images of original pieces can certainly be helpful.

This example is one that belonged to an OSS enlisted man who served in the Norwegian-American NORSO Operational Group, he took part in the PERCY RED Mission. After which he then volunteered to take part in the training of Chinese Commando's in the Far East. This Wing may have been sourced en-route and is one of very few authentic Bullion patterns, I only know of two or three variations.

This Special Force Wing was worn by Jedburgh W/T Operator Maurice Whittle of Team NICHOLAS. It is framed, so not easy to take an image of. Along with the Wing is an image of his fake ID for use on his mission.

Default SF Wings

What a fantastic and educational thread, thank you all for contributing.

Now I know why I have not been able to find an original SF wing to buy, you guys have them all.

Awesome examples you guys have shared! Thanks for posting.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe SF wings and Para Jump Wings represent two different things. The SF wings are more like a unit insignia, whereas the jump wings shows paratrooper qualification.

Apart from original Special Force Wings, I have collected copies, fakes and reproductions, for interest, some far better than others. This is a small batch in the "questionable" department, some are definitely fakes, but one, perhaps two, have a chance. All of these examples were being sold as being authentic!

The top three look the best to me, I have no experience of these but they would have grabbed my interest if seen for sale.

Jack.

None of those wings look good to me. An excellent idea to get a running reference of all the questionable wings that appear on the market. One just sold yesterday for 200 quid that wasn't good.

P.S. Les Hughes has an updated article on the SF wing in the most recent issue of the U.S. “Chute and Dagger” newsletter.

Stay well,
Donovan

These look like the post war Japanese versions described by Les.

Nice.

Thanks for the reference pictures Clive, a few of those would certainly have fooled me.

Hey Donovan, Do you have any information on how I could obtain a copy of that most recent issue of "Chute and Dagger"? Everything I found on the web is about old issues for sale.

Thanks

John

Hi Donovan
I would also be interested in this update - Anything by Les on the SF Wing is to be valued.
