Default Newfoundland - Two Division Formation patches on one sleeve?

Gents,

In WW1 the Newfoundland regiment were in the famous 29th division until near wars end when they were switched to the 9th Scottish Division. My question is this.. I have seen more that one genuine WW1 Newfoundland Regiment tunic in local museums with both the 29th division (red flat triangle) and the 9th Scottish Division (silver thistle on a blue circle shaped cloth backing) on the same tunic same sleeve one above the other! (please see picture in link below). Is this a mistake? or were regiments permitted to keep formation signs from past divisions?

Info please! ?

I can't comment on this practice in WW1 but it was quite common for soldiers of British units in the later stages of WW2 and afterwards to wear the signs of formations they had previously served with under their current signs.

Sample attached.

Jon, what is the RAMC stripe between the two badges?

Thanks,

Terry

Terry , it is an "arm of service" stripe .

Depending on the shade of 'red' it could be RAMC , Military Police or Infantry - Senior Brigade (2nd Brigade two stripes , Junior Brigade three stripes).

Thanks Mike! Wouldn't the cap badge and the title denote that?

Terry,

The stripe was introduced in 1940 before the coloured arm titles as the BEF in France found it difficult to identify soldiers in helmets and without shoulder titles.

Interesting that the medic, whoever it was, continued wearing the sign of a division broken up in July 1944.

Thread has been sideswiped a bit.
Is there any information that two signs were worn during the First WW?
