PTF MFG - On War Service Badge
Hi All,
Sorry to repeat this but I put it in the lapel badge category and am wondering if it's been missed in there. ADMIN please delete one if it's in the wrong place. I picked up a badge like this badge on Sunday because of the "on war service" element but I'm wondering if anyone tell me what I have? Who is PTF manufacturing and would this be WW1 or WW2? If it's any help the dealer was based in Doncaster so I'm assuming it will be from that sort of area but I can't find anything on google. Thanks a lot, Michael |

I am sorry I cannot help but I wonder if the "P" in "PTF" may stand for Paschal in view of centre device ?

Your badge is undoubtedly of WW2 vintage and appears in my book Doing Their Bit; Home Front Lapel Badges 1939-1945 as illustration D14 in the chapter which explains the purpose of On War Service and National Service Badges.
Sadly like many such wartime badges it has not so far been possible to decipher the meaning of PTF although MFG clearly stands for Manufacturing. No such firm appears on the Graces Guide website http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Main_Page which is a useful tool for tracking down defunct British companies. I'd be delighted if someone could identify this firm. Jon |

Perhaps the 'P' is for 'Preston'. Some or other munitions factory, tool factory, foundry...? |

I like that theory about the city arms, it is almost identical and the P fits as well.

Solved
Hi All,
I followed the theory that Jelly Terror suggested saying that the coat of arms related to Preston and emailed the Preston Historical Society. After a few emails back and forward I've had a reply back saying they believe the badge is from the Preston Tyre Fabric Manufacturing Company Limited. It was founded in 1920 and based at Croft Street Mills. In 1937 they had acquired Higher Walton Mill and had moved there by 1939. The last reference she could find for them was at Higher Walton was in 1972. They seem to be involved in tyres (obviously) and hoses in vehicle engines, but with the correct name the company can be found on a google search. Hope that helps everyone. Michael |

Peter, if my googling skills are correct you are referring to the Paschal Lamb? Are you thinking it may be church related? Jon, I haven't seen that website before, that will help me with some other things I'm looking at as well. Thanks again, Michael |

Michael,
No I was not thinking Church related but the Paschal Lamb presumably has some sort of connection with the company, perhaps in the company`s name ? Peter
