Thoughts on this Shako please
hi all
would like your thoughts on this plate. firstly, is it a real or been put together? the 77 looks to have been glued on which i suspect is incorrect and 1 of the 7s is missing. but does it look like a frankenstein badge or not? also, is it suposed to be a 77TH FOOT (EAST MIDDLESEX) REGIMENT shako plate? suppose im asking to see if its worth trying to repair or just pass on the item? thanks in advance BC |

Greetings BC.
Here you go with my thoughts. Firstly, I don't believe the centre numerals nor plumes, nor any devices were ever glued in place. I think they should have been attached via small metal pins/bars or whatever they may be called, to a plate behind the central area. Secondly, I am not aware that Officers Shako plates, (that yours probably purports to be), had velvet backings. But as ever, I stand to be corrected on this. Thirdly, looking at the back of the plate, it's a proper mess, no self respecting manufacturer would let a plate like this leave the work place. However, I think the actual plate itself may well be original with a load of crap added to the back of it to suggest it is a genuine Officer's item. Regards. Brian |

thanks for the reply Brian.
the centre plumes are pinned on. you can see them on the rear pic. dont know why the 77 was glued but you are correct, they should be pinned. i guess id also like to know if it resembles a genuine item? ive tried googling for simmilar 77th plate but cant find one let alone another of simmilar vintage. hence why i suspected its been put together. along with the poor workmanship. will leave it alone i think. to many things to worry about cheers \bc |

Finally found it, I knew I had a picture of a genuine example somewhere in the depths of my stuff.
1869 - 78 Shako plate.jpg The central device is one piece and I believe silver. Regards. Brian |
