Default Early Numbered SAS Button Hole Enamel Badge

I wonder if anyone might be able to shed some light on this small SAS button hole badge. It's numbered on the crescent moon fixing 977.
It looks quite old to me, possibly wartime ?
When did the association start ?

Thank you very much for the information. It would be interesting to see if it's possible to tie the Number to a name...
Thanks again for the information.
