Just a quick question if I may, hopefully not highjacking your thread!
I visited the WG museum at the Park Hall country side experience a number of years ago,in there, there was a bronze leak cap star on blades, the guy said it was for the OSD cap, I have never seen the cap with a bronze badge, always the wire one as depicted on your cap.
Any ideas?

Thank you 41st
A nice bronze one with blades, same as the one I saw in the museum.
Looks like it has service wear, and looks WW1 era??
Just haven't seen photos of one being worn.
Is this in your collection may I ask?
Cheers

Chris

Part of the shoulder titles I believe. The mark above the top fixing, is were the hexagonal fixing would have been. And maker marked ?

Chris,
Yes it is.
I am not sure what a "should" title is and thus cannot offer any reasoned response.

Hi Andy.
I can see where you're coming from, I can see the mark for the hexagonal fitting, and what appears to be a makers mark.
It does appear to be bronze though.
So if you're right, someone has cut the WG part off the leak, cut the fitting off, bronzed it, and, what looks like quite good brazing of the tangs, and is there a makers mark Welsh Guards shoulder title?
An interesting badge indeed.
Chris

Apart from the one you mention and the seemingly field made example shown, there was never a metal osd badge for the WG afaik. The example shown is more likely to be for an or's cap, probably because they didn't have one and made it from a st.

The Birmingham mint? badge was on blades, I have seen them for sale as osd badges.

I have a maker marked WG st.

The only Welsh Guards badge in the Birmingham Mint "Queen's Guards set was the bullion embroidered officer version.

A gold anodised badge other ranks badge with blades was in the Danbury Mint set.

As you say, I didn't think there was a bronze OSD, certainly lack of photographic evidence.
The makers mark on this looks to be on the leak itself, running from top to bottom.
And a good job on the tangs.
Yes, it has the mark where the hexagonal lug should be, but it has the appearance of bronze though, an OR making up his own badge would have surly left it gilding metal.
Unless this badge has been made up to deceive?
All I can say is a lot of effort has been made don't you think?

Chris, it certainly is an unusual badge, quite possibly unique. I don't think an OSD WG badge is listed in any of the reference books, but never say never

in regards how it looks colourwise in the photos, I have seen plenty of WG st's that are quite dark looking and have lost the original finish/colouring

Who is the maker ? If it is indeed bronze, you have a very nice badge. It could be a one off.
