Default Monmouthshire Yeoamnry 1908-20 cap badge

Chaps,

A rarely seen Yeomanry badge from another unit that went RA in 1920. Montgomeryshire Yeomanry in white metal and 2 lugs (one is an old repair).
I am satisfied that this is 100% genuine (unlike all the MIY ones you see with sliders)

So far a M.Y one has eluded me and it's certainly a lot rarer than the M.I.Y which leads me to believe the earlier badge was worn for a long period after 1908 and replacements weren't needed.

Anyway I've got both a brass and w/m M.I.Y. The w/m version is a one piece stamping which logically it ought to be but it doesn't look or feel right with no depth to it. However the brass does, but has an attached scroll and a slider with a lovely crimp line and in my opinion is the real thing. I once had an identical one in w/m, bought in a collection of 100% genuine badges every one of them WW1 or earlier and I traded it with one of the country's best known dealers who featured it on the website.

Default Montgomeryshire Yeomanry

Alan, don't you mean Montgomeryshire? Which these badges clearly are.
The Monmouthshire Yeomanry were only around for a short period and were absorbed into the Gloucestershire early in the 19th C. As such cap badges do not exist for the Monmouthshire.
I will post my Montgomeryshire on the weekend.
Keith, your white metal is a fake in my opinion. I have never seen a genuine one with lugs on the bottom scroll. Most genuine Montgomeryshire have a slider. At the time cap badges were made with lugs the Montgomeryshire O.R's wore a collar badge as their cap badge. I will add more info on dates when I post my badges.

Thanks for the comments, as I said I'm happy with the brass one but not the other. That's another ebay seller who sells genuine items as always added onto my blacklist.

Hi Kieth,
Sorry about the badge but I love the cryptic clue.We are all learning something on this site I hope the bent dealers are trembling at the loss of revenue.

Well bearing in mind information that's come about regarding supposed reputable auction sites selling iffy items (see Pals threads) nothing surprises me anymore. A one piece stamping with lugs and I can understand someone thinking it's OK but if there's doubt in my mind then surely another experienced collector/dealer ought to feel the same? As it is I'm not too bothered as the brass one only cost about £8 along with a lovely maker marked Buffs badge.

Garry,
What is going on at the ends of the title scroll - has it been broached at one time or is it 2 part? I am not sure why this badge would be made in 2 parts.

Alan

Alan,

They all seem to be two-part badges.

Garry -

all except mine which is one piece. You do get 2 part all w/m badges but they tend to be the exceptions rather than the norm.

Default Montgomertshire Yeomanry

Here are my MY badges. All titled on the photos.
All the O.R's are of two piece constuction and the fakes shown at the end are of one piece constuction.
The Officer's could be a converted collar as both blades would appear to be later additions.
