Default UNKNOWN PATCH

I have this badge which I think is, maybe, early Bundeswehr infantry but I am uncertain. It is Yellow (gold) on black.
Can you ID this please?

I think this is a French Military education award that comes in three grades.

Of course I may be wrong !

Defiantly not German, although it will be found in a lot of collections identified as a German badge.
