Default 48th Highlanders Sporran

Added this to my collection today. Don't know if the sporran is the real issue item but the badge appears to be a very nice Ellis Brothers copper variation. There is a number inside the sporran written in pencil (2393407) but I have no idea if it relates to the 48th at all.

Looking for opinions on this one. It only cost £10 so not a great deal.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Hi Bill, That is a really nice sporran at a bargain price. With the Ellis mark, copper construction and the pre-1922 pattern badge it is likely a between the wars type. It could be First World War as well.

Both of the units listed under the 48th Highlanders were battalions of the Central Ontario Regiment, First World War induction and training units. They were in Canada and as the service record confirms (thanks Mike Vee), he did not serve overseas as he was not fit for overseas service.
From the documentation in his file, he did not qualify for the 1914-18 War Medal. With the indication that he returned to the US after the war, it is likely that was the end of his military service, so the sporran would date to 1917-1919.

Bill, Mike,

Wow, thank you so much for the help you have provided. This is amazing, especially his service record. I never thought anything like that would be available.

I knew the badge was early but didn't know about the sporran itself but it would make sense as it has the number in it.

Something I will definitely treasure and display in my collection with his details.

Thanks again for the assistance, Bill
