Early RE badges
I picked up an auction lot in 2018 from the Charles Thomas Collection. I wanted the RE officers waist belt clasps. With this lot came some other interesting items.
Would like your thoughts on the following two badges. The first came with the following notes. Shako Feather socket Brass C1825 and then underneath that in 1825 a brass grenade was worn at hte bottem of each skirt of the coatee. The socket of the 12inch goose feather worn with the shako also consisited of a grenade. P4170501.jpg P4170502.jpg The badge is 63 mm high by 44mm. on the reverse the lugs have the bar going through a lower hole, above that is a much larger hole Last edited by Sapper795; 17-04-20 at 03:08 PM. Solid brass badge for pork pie cap the crimea 1855 And below that the bursting grenade badge seems to have been adopted by the sappers and miners in place of the ordnance shield, the inner flames of the 1825 and 1855 devices above anticipate the subsequent R.E. grenade of 9 to 10 flames against the R.A. of 7 |

I think the solid, cast badge has appeared in threads before and that I have mine labelled up as being Dutch.
No, I havn't got them labelled up as Dutch, but that's what I saw them identified as somewhere some while ago. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 17-04-20 at 03:15 PM. Reason: Image added. |

I have an idea that I've seen the grenade with eyelet at the bottom in illustrations of French shakos - but I could be wrong.

Not necessarily - that's just what I've seen them described as - and one of mine's fitted to a bit of leather strap, so is it a badge for headress and / or other equipment?

I would agree the appearance and construction of the two badges is not British.

Hey Chris - Following our conversation the other day, I’ve been doing some digging (subsequently came across this thread). Attached is a screenshot of a photo of C/Sgt Kester Knight of the RS&M in c1856. Could be the Shako feather grenade socket at the top?

Hi mate.
Looks interesting, will have a closer look at the two badges I have, would be great to know what type of fitting was on the badge in the photo. Would be great to see some of these very early badges in the flesh. Just got back from my holiday, will be in touch shortly. Happy new year. Chris |
