southern rhodesian vols-western district
The Southern Rhodesian Volunteers were originally established under that name in 1898. According to Radford, in his book," Service before Self", the Volunteer units were named after their home districts. In October 1899, the Salisbury and Umtali Volunteers became the Eastern Division of the SRV. The Bulawayo Volunteers became the Western Division, SRV. In 1903, the two divisions were amalgamated and became simply the Southern Rhodesian Volunteers.
I wasnt aware that the two divisions had any of their own badges until this badges turned up last week in Pietermaritzburg. It has a 3 screw fastening arrangement, so I guess that it was attached to a valise or cross-belt. I assume that there is also a similar badge for the Eastern Division. Has anyone seen one ?
