Default Queens Regiment (West Surrey)

The dreaded 'golf ball' fleece rears its ugly head again. However, before condeming this badge take a careful look. I think it has been cast. There is also a reasonable provenance for this as the 4th Bttn went to India from a rainy Croydon in 1914 and didn't come home until 1920. The slider is springy and the badge solid. However, it could be a dodgy repro and that is life...maybe it is the original that all the dodgy repros were cast from!

Matti,
IMO that is a modern pattern slider (uniform shape without taper) and the slider is fitted to the rear of the flag/banner? This would not stand up to use as it would lead to broken badges very quickly!! I am certain that if it had been an "In theatre made" item an example would have been supplied to work off, which would most definately had it's slider fitted to the body (or lugs) - A fake methinks!!

What about my lovely blackened brass version ?................................you know, the one with an inferiority complex ??

A nice stiff, slightly tapered slider fitted to the body ???

Dave.

The trouble I feel is that these 'golf ball' fleeced West Surreys have been around so long that they are almost gaining a degree of currency amongst those starting out in the collecting field. Also it is easy to give them a degree of plausibility, e.g. cast in India during WW1. So, beware!
