The Badges of the Manchester Regiment

Gentlemen,
It occurs to me that when looking at the two badges together, the copy is actually rather disturbing when compared to most copies of badges in general, I can understand how some people are going to get caught out by it!

Yes Frank,

There are good copies of this badge because its the 2nd most scarce of the Regiments six VB badges.

There are cheaper copies with sliders, but they have improved over the years.

The copies of the 1st, 2nd and 5th Battalions are still s##t.

It is very annoying, I have to say that I have nothing against copies in general, unless they are not discribed as such when being sold by the dishonest.

Its generally accepted as the Militia Bn glengarry badge.

The VB's did have numbered straps on theirs. I have had/seen 2VB, 3VB, 5VB and 6VB.

If anyone has photos of 1VB, 4VB or 5VB they would be appreciated.

These are photos of badges of the 6th Lancashire (1st Manchester) RVC and also used during its existence as the 2VB.

They are all the same badge, worn on the Pouch Belt and the O/R Shako.
The motto of the Bn is "From Acorns Spring Oaks".

The one on the left is that of Colonel Sir Robert Bridgeford KCB, VD the CO from 1867 - 1902. It is hallmarked Birmingham 1879.

The next 3 are various silver/silver plated officers versions and the last one is the O/R Shako badge, also found blackened for NCO's.

Harry Yorke Usher served at Gallipoli with the 1st East Lancashire Field Ambulance, RAMC (T). He later served with the 6th Btn, Manchester Regiment, but judging from the 7 figure service number it was post 1918. In 1911 he was living in Pendleton, Manchester but seems to have moved to Bradford in the 1920's. He died in 1975 age 79.

Harry Ushers medal collection sold by Glendinings on 22/7/75 (see attached )

but part of his ( badge ? ) collection sold a couple of years before his death. I wonder where his own medals are now ?

Peter,

your post has rather saddened me as it highlights the inherent futility in collecting. You spend a lifetime putting a collection together and gathering knowledge and expertise in your chosen subject and unless you bequeath the collection to an institution that will keep it all together it is just scattered to the four winds. Particularly as a great many of the old county regiments no longer have museums. Likewise unless you take the time to write up and publish your knowledge for the benefit of others it dies with you.

Thank god that we have a forum.

Good evening.

Not my particular area of specialisation, but an interesting illustration in Post#38.

If memory serves me correctly there exists a 6th Lancashire/First Manchester helmet plate hallmarked 1879-80, with matching hallmarked WBC, and a complete set of en-suite hallmarked fittings for the blue cloth helmet (chain, spike, spike mount, and ear bosses), plus a matching helmet plate for the 2nd. VB hallmarked 1889-90, and the matching 2nd.VB WBC hallmarked ensuite.

Oh, and I forgot, the large buttons to the latter hallmarked 1890-91.

Now where have I seen them? Could it be in one of those book things I keep banging on about? Or, on my desk?

Must get that fishing gear moved around.

All his military uniform was sold at Spink Auction in 1997 including all those items you quote.

Unfortunately I was in a period of poverty at that time due to kids etc and wasnt collecting actively and knew nothing about the sale.

I picked up the pouch belt with plate and its undress pouch and a full dress pouch many years later.
I would love to own all of it though!.

Hi Simon,
I was in Manchester today but parked across the canal bridge behind Spittlefields and into Salford, it struck me that the Salford City Crest is very similar to the old Manchester City Crest (as seen in the image which I took on the Salford side of the bridge.)
I wonder if you could tell me if this Crest was ever used by any Salford based Battalions etc on their insignia.
