Default RCAMC armband

At the beginning of WW2, there was a lack of everything from uniforms to weapons to webbing. Many units recruited men but had no way of identifying them as soldiers. One method was to have armbands made up for wear on the civilian clothing until the man could be kitted out. The armbands were also worn in some cases by recruiters. Early war armbands are scarce. They are found in a variety of materials and manufacturing methods.
This example is to the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, Non-Permanent Active Militia. 4th Casualty Clearing Station. Edmonton Alberta, Military District 13.
