1916 War Service badge
Could it have been a shortage of nickel?

The War Munition volunteers badge i know comes in brass and WM. The brass being the regular issue, the Wm being the supervisors or Foremans. Could it be a similar thing applied to the war service badge. The metal colour reflects the persons status?
Cheers, Dave

Cheers, Dave[/QUOTE I have a feeling (don't we all..) from way back that it might have had something to do with the amount of time/hours that they put into the job. My Mum was doing this at one stage before she joined the ATS and she was a 'full time' volunteer, rather than 'part time' and I can remember hers being in WM. 'Apparently' it 'disappeared' years ago during one of the many postings/married quarter clear-outs etc. Assuming my memory is not playing tricks on me - I am getting on you know... next time I speak to her I'll see if she ever found it and can recall. dave |

Dave, you most probably are correct in what you say, it would make a lot of sense. My source for the wm and brass differences came from an ebay auction so i have no way of substantiating the claim.
Cheers, Dave.

The lengths I go to for this hobby.... Rang my Mum last night and although she really is getting on a bit, she is still fairly lucid and (pretty much) repeated what I recall her saying some years ago (without me putting words in her mouth). Of course, now she is old enough and allowed to be grumpier - she started giving me stick about this being the only reason I was calling her. "You and your bloody badges". It keeps her on her toes though, especially when I tell her I am calling from a Nunnery.... Back to work, david |
