Silver presentation plate
Hi Gents,
Unusual item! A silversmith in Totnes I visited recently, who understanding that I had served in the forces, showed me a presentation plate, 1 kg in weight that he is reluctant to consign to scrap as it would be of more value to a military collector. I would welcome any information on the officer it was presented to as such a beautiful and historic item should not be turned into meaningless silver trinkets. Regards Kevin |

Kevin,
I have Army Lists for every year but I cannot find any officer of any rank named E. CLARKE in the Royal Fusiliers at that time. There are several officers named E. CLarke with and without further initials in the British Army at that time but none with a RF connection. His connection with the Sergeants Mess may have been in another capacity or even as a member of the Royal Navy? Its a puzzle. regards

Simon,
Thanks for your very quick reply. It sounds like a challenge to solve this mystery, sadly the siversmith called "Omar" was given this plate by a friend a while ago and could not give me any more info on it. For a presentation of this quality to be given to a Lieutenant for years of service, and presented by the WO`s and Sgt`s mess, would suggest that he came from the ranks and certainly a WO1 or 2 with maybe a QM`s commission. I am sure you have considered this and only suggest this for anyone else that may help to solve this mystery. Regards Kevin Last edited by Third Tankie; 18-07-20 at 05:38 PM. Reason: Bad spelling |

Possibly this chap, though the salver is engraved to the 1st Bn.
First Name: E Surname: Clarke Nationality: British Information: Quartermaster. Rank: Honorary Lieutenant Service: British Army Regiment: Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment) Battalion: 3rd Battalion Seniority Date: 11/10/1909 Army List 1909. Edit: could be it was presented to one of the members of the 1st Bn's Sgts Mess upon his promotion and transfer to the 3rd Bn? Unclear as to whether this entry related to 3rd Bn The Royal Fusiliers (City of London) or1st Bn The London Regiment. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 18-07-20 at 07:28 PM. |

There was an E Clarke who was in the 1st and the 7th Bns The Royal Fusiliers, a sergeant, later Lt and Captain QM but I think he was commissioned during WWI.
