Hello,

The top of the badge is part of a Bugle Horn, over ERV, over 9.
The badge is that of the 9th Rifle Volunteer Corps of one of 3 units beginning with E, namely Edinburgh, Elgin and Essex which was probably worn on a shako or a pouch belt.

I am unable to say which of the 3 units.

regards

Greetings.

I don't believe it is Essex related, although of course, I may be wrong.

9th Essex RVs were Silvertown Rifle Volunteers and as far as I'm aware, did not use this style of badge, or at least I have not seen or know of one.

The following is an unknown Essex RV badge, with a similar but different style of entwined letters.

ERV NK.JPG

Regards.

Brian

The highest number reached in Edinburgh was the 3rd.

9th Elginshire RVC existed from 1871 - 1880 only, becoming 'K' Company, 1st Elginshire RVC.

9th Esex RVC was raised in 1860, part of 2nd Admin. Bn. of Essex RVs until 1866 when it became independent; renumbered 4th Essex RVC in 1881; redesignated 4th VB, The Essex Regiment in 1883.

Nearest image I could find was the Eton Volunteer Rifle Corps , could the badge be some earlier variation ?

It aslo looks to me that the 9 has been added at some point.

A complete guess , so please don't shoot the messenger !

PS. I now can't get The Jam song "Eton Rifles" out of my head !
