Default Please help identify military badge

Hi there,

I hope you might help me narrow down the badge lapel my 2nd great grandfather was wearing in this photo from 1915. He was born and lived in Coventry in 1877 so if conscription was around I guess he would have been 18 in 1895.

Some people on the genealogy forum pointed me to the 11th royal hussars. But they don't have that extra halo scroll on top which I assume may have said something like 'Warwickshire'. I found another badge that does have a top-scroll which reads 'prince alberts own yeo' so maybe Edwards was similar to this, but without the bottom part mentioning south africa.

So I wonder what you think his badge might have been. I have no knowledge of whether he was in the army or not. His name was Edward Timms.

Hope you can educate me a little,

Thank you,

The Leicestershire (Prince Albert’s Own) Yeomanry (TF)
The badge used since 1916.
In 1921 the designation changed to The Leicestershire Yeomanry (Prince Albert’s Own) (TA)
In 1922 the extra scroll as shown in your badge picture was added.

Se also Cavalry Volunteers Leicestershire - Debyshire.

But, take care, there is an expert about this regiment here on the forums and I have no doubt he will tune in and give more details (and even correct me where I am wrong ).

The full title is 'The Prince Albert's Own Leicestershire Yeomanry (Hussars).
Kipling & King (reference book) number 1424.

You'll probably find that Griff has your one or very similar enamelled badge somewhere in his collection.

As far as my information goes, that was the title from 1844 (in fact my source says Prince Albert's Own Leicestershire Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry), changed somewhere in the 1800s to Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry (The Prince Albert's Own) and changed again in 1901 into Leicestershire (Prince Albert's Own) Imperial Yeomanry. Thus all older then the period we are talking about.

I also am not sure if the (hussars) there was part of the title, or just a specification of the cavalry type of this regiment.

But I assume Griff will know all the fine details.

I've found the following badge (attached) which I think follows the lapel badge on my 2nd great grandad very closely. Also the 'regiment ribbon' at the top is white, which it seems to be on his too from the picture.

Would this badge be prior to 1915 or there abouts? (The time at which I believe this photo to have been taken)
