I am pretty certain of the following (if anyone could corroborate I would appreciate it)
Irish Guards O/Ranks are now issued a metal cap star with large centre (gilt type finish). Senior NCO's bi-metal with large centre , silver and gold type finish (different from the actual silver and gilt centenary star) John Last edited by Alan O; 14-01-09 at 12:04 PM. |

Chris.
A picture paints a thousand words. The a/a 1970 badge is on the right. Later ones had the rose in red and this was often painted in by the soldiers. The 2003 gilt/enamel one is a new design and much higher quality. There were a couple of makers and the rose comes in 2 shaes of red. The backing is primrose yellow and the earlier ones were made of yellow plastic. This one is foam. Alan |

If Parachute regiment and Royal Gurkha Rifles are classed as Infantry perhaps they should be added to the list ? Have spares of both RRS and Mercian Regt - PM me if interested. OC14 |

Hi Guys,
I'm really busy at the mo but all these badges should be scanned via a quality dedicated scanner (reverse too as there do not seem to be to many of them) and uploaded to a Picasa web page or similar are a photographic documentary record. Any takers out there? Good excuse to buy that dedicated scanner that you always promised yourself too. Regards Chris |

The Royal Yeomanry has, what appears to be, a plated metal badge. Its not the same quality as the original brass badges of the County Yeomanry Squadrons that make up the Regiment.... but is better than the AA badges.
The Royal Mercian Yeomanry has and enamled badge that looks more like a pin badge..... but better than the AA. The best Yeomanry badges I have seen are the Queens Own Yeomanry (running fox) ..... and my favourite is the A sqn (Dorset Yeomanry) RWxY..... this is a well designed badge. This badge is also an enamled badge.

The Squadron will only give them out to the boys..... they do pop up on ebay from time to time. NB, the NCO arm badges are "as per Squadron" if your thinking of collecting them with your RY Cap badge...... I have been told that the regimental button (RY) will be available in 2010.... but it will probably be 2014.... the Yeomanry squadrons will resist for as long as possible (they are very unhappy with the Cap badge unoficially).

This is just the sort of thing we need. Alan, set up another thread entitled Modern Badges or similar with the URL so that it is not lost in them many postings of this thread. When I know what is going on re: anodised badges I will reorganise to show just authorised items removing unofficial commissions, mistakes etc. but this will be some months yet. Regards Chris |

Alan,
Of all the new badges shown do we know what was the first to be issued and what date it was issued on? Regards Chris |

Chris,
The majority date from 2003-5 but some are earlier. Those replacing existing designs (RGJ/LI/PWO Yorkshires were made about 2004-5 just before the new regts were formed and the designs became obselete). The RGBW were a new regt in 1994 and theirs was the first bi-metal badge with that finish. The PWRR were formed in 1992 and their gun metal badge came in first with the No1 dress following later. I aim to add dates to the badges when I have time. Alan |

The disparity in, and range of, dates are because the new badges were only ordered when existing stocks ran out and regts decided that they wanted an improved design/construction etc. Some regts/Corps are still using a/a and it is still being issued to them today.
In the last 10 years, when 'new' regts have been formed from amalgamations they have used this opportunity of a new production run to have the badges made in improved metals. I can't think of an example when this has not been the case. The last 'new' design to be made in a/a was the Royal Logistic Corps. The RLC used the occasion of their 10 year anniversary to chnage from an a/a to an improved metal design. Alan |
