Default Solid centre Devonshire Regiment.

Does anyone have a date as to when this Devonshire Regiment badge would have been issued, I'm sure there's an old thread ref this badge but I can't find it.
Cheers Tony.

Never seen a thread on these but I’d always assumed they were WW1 ‘funnies’.

Happy to be corrected though.

They have come up in discussions a few times but I can't remember an actual thread with any conclusions.

I like these as they have the scroll ends showing each side of the castle.

Its interesting that mine also has a cut down vertical shank, yours has also had "other" fittings at some point, either lugs or more likely a brooch fitting, I saw a voided Devon badge recently which had both the shank and brooch fitting at the same time, probably to wear on civilian clothes by a medically discharged soldier of family member which may date them to the WW1 period?

Rob

The 'first Devon cap badge' was Pattern 4612/1898 (12th January 1898). It had a QVC and had a castle in the centre upon a WM star.

The 'second Devon cap badge' was Pattern 4612A/1903 (31st February 1903). It is described 'as before with Tudor Crown'.

(K&K show two Devon badges (nos 601 and 602 QVC and KC.)

I assume that the 1903 Pattern was worn into the 1950s.

I'm not sure whether this has answered your query.....

This album shows a number of WW1 variants including the unpierced Devons, unpierced Suffolk Regiments, partially voided Dorsetshire Regiment, Welsh Regiment and others.

I had unvoided Bedfords, Northants, Suffolks and Devons back in the day.

Admit I’ve not seen an unvoided Northants before. All the solid Beds I’ve seen are the all GM fakes.

If I recall the solid Suffolk badge is WW2 vintage, a relative of Alan’s collected one in the 1940s.

I plan at some point in the not too distant future to make an album similar to Alan’s of these funnies. Most I’m certain date to WW1.

I was given to believe that my four were all early WW1 products that were produced by makers that were new to badge making and banged them out unvoided. Given the urgent demands for badges at the time they were accepted and issued with the understanding that future orders would be corrected before delivery. This was back in the 1970s so you had take the dealer spiel with a large dose of salt, some things never change though. However, I was never in any doubt about the authenticity of the four badges in question.
