Question A new one on me . . !

Whilst trawling ebay I came across this item (265492610928) a Military Police plastic cap badge with the tip of the crown missing.

The vendor has intimated that the missing tip may be deliberate due to freemasonry connections.

Your thoughts please . . !

Rob

Hi Rob

I heard that many years ago although the collector (and then-serving police officer) who told me was sceptical himself. It came up as at the time I had a Leeds City Police helmet plate which clearly had something missing from the top with file marks on the exposed edge. The plate didn't have a crown but was topped with an owl (missing on mine), so had either been broken or removed at some point. Anyway, that was the story I was told, he wasn't a Mason himself and, as I say, seemed to think it an urban legend, rather than hard fact. Whether any of our members who have served in the police AND are Freemasons will confirm or deny it time will tell.

All the best

Graham

Have heard this old ‘badge story’ before. Never ever seen anything to back it up.

Cannot totally rule it out in all cases but I expect in most instances other factors are behind such intentional damage.

A common story churned out by individuals who want to get rid of a damaged badge. A well known police collector was famed for trotting it out. He explained the lack of an orb on top of a badge to me at one meeting, saying that, "Its masonicly marked". My reply, "You mean its broke!"

Dave, I love that little story, no doubt badges do get damaged and I suppose a good tale can always go with them.

I once had a solid centre Suffolk Regt cap badge and the seller told me the wearer had a close call as it had been hit by a bullet, the hole was about a 64th of an inch wide . . !
