I just acquired this. It has a round ‘O’ so would I be correct in assuming it’s a re-strike?

Yes, that is a typical UK 'reproduction'.

Re-strike would imply that particular die was used to make original badges. It was not.

Nice officers badge, I have the same type with that semi solid back but with screw back.
