Default Canal Zone FS

I own the formation sign in the attached scan, but am unsure whether it is Canal Zone North or South as it seems to work both ways up!

Howard Cole shows this FS having a green border, and the white felucca sail is off-set differently on both of his sketches.

This is Canal Zone North - apply visual imagination and you'll see that the sail is larger than the hull. Invert your sign and the felucca has obviously capsized! Canal Zone South has the same vessel in the bottom left (or occasionally bottom right) corner. There's a rare variant with a black F in top right corner which was worn by Fayid Garrison. Mike

Default Canal Zone

Thanks Mike,

I take it the green border is an error by Howard Cole then?

Stephen.

Stephen, In my opinion Howard Cole based his illustration on the sign as painted on a vehicle - in which case a green border will have given definition to a yellow square on a sand coloured mudguard. For the same reason some green coloured signs - such the diablos of some WW2 Tk Bdes - Mikewere given a narrow white border when painted on a green or OG tank.
