Pill Box numeral?

Dear All, I was shown an original image of 2 soldiers in India, one later became 1st RIrF (formerly 87th) but in the image in question, although dressed similarly, one man is 12th, the other 72nd ? with a device over the number, can't quite make out, may be crown ?

Could anyone advise me of the 1870's or pre 1881 pill box badges of these units, photo taken Calcutta...my lack of tech skills don't permit me to add the image here but if any one pm's me I can email same for perusal.

The 87th/1 RIrF man fought at Tel El Kebir but no 'papers' available...
