Have seen for sale black R Sigs Capbadge as used by 264 and 63 and can only say, "What a lot of rubbish".
As has previously been mentioned, only black capbadges were self painted. Fantasy that they were used by blah. |

Just wanted to add a few words to this thread..
I am ex RSigs and never, despite several tours in NI was not once issued with a black badge and I cant recall it even for 233 or 264 Sqns I did the same as everyone else simply used mat black paint from the QM's .. I cannot even recall ever seeing such a thing worn anywhere. Perhaps it was somthing only issued as a unit thing .. ie as a unit and not as an individual from BAOR or other area on detatchment ? |

I do seem to remeber a unit,( infantry ? ) having a black cap badge and being scolded for "looking like a f'ing fairy on top of the tree " ( with my Jimmy ) on one execise but that was definatly not in NI .. |

Absolute rubbish, I NEVER saw a black cap badge, painted or otherwise while with 63 sigs, what would be the point? we NEVER wore beige berets in the field.

Just spoken to my son, who has recently left the Royal Corps of Signals.
Between 1999 and 2001 all members in all the Corps' in 39 Brigade were ordered to wear a black painted cap badge, most were done by the individual, some were done on mass in the store. I have a picture of my son wearing one in his beret. |

hi all,
just thought id put my imput in. i was with 11udr from 1980 and we had 2 cap badges one a/a for wear in base and one painted matt black when on duty outside base. we were based with 3bdg and they did the same although in the early 90s i did see more cloth badges cap badges being worn by all troops except us perhaps it was up to the commanding officer at the time what type of badge were worn. philip |

Many lads in 87 Sqdn who chose to wear a beret on exercise in the UK in 1986-1994 would wear a blackened Jimmy they had done at home. Others chose to remove badges and it was permissible to wear 'hats comical' i.e. anything that one chose as long as it was fairly military. Some older soldiers of 70s vintage still had the commo peaked caps they had been issued. None of our PSIs wore blackened badges and blackened badges were purely for exercise only.
Nor were officially blackened badges one of those pieces of kit young Signalmen tried to angle out of storemen who rebuffed us with 'thats for regulars or NI only'. I can't remember them in any catalogues either. Last edited by matti467; 09-02-10 at 08:29 PM. Reason: Further thoughts |
