I dont know the exact time the Aus badges were issued. That would need to be researched in the archvies I guess. However many of the Commonwealth/Empire Signals officers continued to wear their own regimental badges until signal badges became available. The Engineer Signals just carried on wearing their old badges. This was certainly the case in New Zealand and India.

Dear Quicksilver
Are we saying that there is a possibility after 1925 and up to 1931 that Australian Engineer Officers who transferred to the Signals may well have worn an Australian Engineers cap badge with the new Australian Corps of Signals collar badges !!!!!!! Or collar badges as hat badges.!!!!!!!!!! I have sent an email to Jim Gordon in Melbourne, perhaps he will come up with an answer. Cheers Chris |

Hi Chris,
No. What I am trying to say is that after Corps of Signals were raised that often they did not have the badges approved or made so that they wore the badges from their old regiments. While most of them would have been engineer signals then they would have worn their engineer badges. In NZ the NZ Corps of Signals badge was not issued until the 1935 although the corps was raised in 1921, and the old engineer badges continued to be worn up until the early 1940s by many as they wasted them out. Waste not want not! As regards the Aus Sig collars I regret I dont have my notes to hand which give the dates of official issue. My guess is that the round collars without the scroll were worn with the cap badge with a scroll. However, its only a guess. Hopefully an Aus collector can point us in the right direction. Slick Mick, in your photo of Aus Signal badges you had a bronze or dark coloured straight SIGNAL title. It looks like a Canadian Signal title - I dont think it is Australian, but if it is I should like to see photographic evidence if possible of it being worn in Australia. The Americans use the term SIGNAL instead of SIGNALS and the Canadians used the straight title for a few years, but I dont think the Australians ever did. Hopefully some one can clarify this matter.

No idea about that title - I can ask my mate about it as it's his collection.

Thanks Mick. In my Canadian Signals I have two straight titles like that plus one that has been bent into a curve, all three slightly different.
