Googling Birmingham hallmark 1895 produces several results on different websites (attached) that look exactly like the hallmark in the OP. So it is not just Millmeads site that shows this as the mark for that date.

I agree the book does show a gap which is clearer than the illustration on the website. However I don’t wonder if as the earlier picture I showed of the Old English script ‘v’ does allow for a closed and some variation by manufacturers depending on their interpretation of the Old English font. Indeed it’s clear this run was old English script and many examples I’ve look at of the font the top of the v is closed and often the only thing that really differentiates it from a ‘u’.

I’m more convinced than ever it’s 1895 so we will have to agree to disagree.

I agree with Phil, no way is it an o for 1888.

Not sure when it started being used, I think around 1880? It was used by both the Royal Scots and Scots Guards, still in use by SG.
