That version had a crown above. The recruiters was just the cypher.

Ah, I didn't realise that, the "London Types" Recruiting Sergeant appears to be wearing the cypher with crown above. I attempted to post a cropped image of the badge but for some reason have been unable to.

The last one I saw was in one of Bosley's sales and they provided the attribution.

It's quite possible that more than one variant was used. It's not an area that I have looked into that much.

For what itís worth (though I appreciate these old newspaper renderings arenít always the most accurate pieces of draughtsmanship) this image from an edition of ĎThe War Illustratedí dated October 1915:
