RE SD cap question
Hopefully not too dumb a question, but what cap badge would be worn on this cap, it has AA buttons. I assume, perhaps incorrectly that it would have an AA badge?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks Griff, I assumed that was the case but cheaper to ask than find out after I splash out on one to restore it.

Also applied to the Kings Liverpools, despite having the same badges on full and service dress caps, the chin strap buttons on the full dress cap were mounted silver and gilt whilst on the service dress cap anodised buttons were worn.
P.B.

A officers silver & gilt badge would have been worn in this type of hat from WO 1 upwards. The fact that it has A/A buttons could mean a WO 1 or commissioned officer could have been saving money or that the A/A buttons were the only one's available at the time.

thanks Peter and Jerry. So either S&G or AA would be OK, though S&G is more correct but AA might have been worn.

As I recall the only time I saw R.E. officers wear A/A badge was on operations i.e. Northern Ireland and this was in the beret so as not to "stand" out (as a target)

The cap badge would not be a/a on a SD cap but s/g as issued. Any subaltern wearing an a/a cap badge would have incurred the adjt's wrath.

An S/G Badge with 2 long lugs E&W would be the correct badge for a WO1 & Officer to wear with Annodised buttons on the Kharki & Coloured SD Cap to match AA Buttons on Service Dress. Mounted Buttons can be used on the Coloured SD Cap but normally only seen on a Field Officers Braided Peaked Cap (Major & above)
The S/G Badge was/is an issued item. Are there an holes in the front of cap to indicate what type of button was fixed? |

The cap had been retro fitted with a Welch Regiment OR's bi metal on a slider and the lot was up for sale as Welsh Guards until I pointed out to the seller the badge was not WG and asked about the buttons. He replied they were ERII and dropped the price to such that I thought I would buy it anyway. The badge is a post 1920 original and the cap, was as shown above. The front has a large hole in the seam from the WR badge but there is the slightest hint of two E-W holes from a lugged badge which do not show very clearly in the picture.
