I think the badge looks great. As a keen bird-watcher any badges with birds in the design are fine by me. Not the most life-like image of a peregrine falcon but still a handsome badge to my eyes.

SF 'light' on the cheap!
I was given one of the prototype arm badges several yrs ago when it first raised it's head. The sub unit 2 i/c had his desk covered in the 'S bayonet' badges on different backings, albeit the badge was the same.
Mad they couldn't think up a new cap badge! I assume it will be in 'new metal' rather than anodised, the fakers will no doubt have already cut the dies. |

Royal Irish 'Privates'
Will this mean the rank of Ranger is dropped by the R Irish?
Oh yes, and wasn't one of the Bn's to come from the RGR? I think the original list was 1 Scots/4 PWRR/2 RGR & a Rifles Bn? Someone will put me right... Last edited by buttonhole badge; 30-11-21 at 12:54 PM. Reason: add |

I wouldn't mind the badge for my work van door to be honest. It is a lot better than what is currently on it that doesn't reflect my role at all.

Weren't the Scouts a VERY black unit? Don't know the percentage, but high. Heros whatever their hue.

Two RGR Battalions serve in rotation with 16 Air Assault Brigade (currently 1 RGR - will be 2 RGR in 2022), with the other battalion in Brunei. 3 RGR will be a Specialised Infantry Bn, serving with 11 SFAB in Aldershot, but that is not a Ranger Bn. Only ever met one genuine Sealous Scout to my knowledge. He was white but said the unit was 90% black.

I met two in Cambridge back around the late 70's at a college bar (the ex was a student, her friends brother and his mate visited from Rhodesia).
I can't remember anything military being discussed, I didn't even try to scrounge any badges, I'm afraid I was very, very drunk. Presumably. |

I wonder if the words of FM Sir William Slim (Defeat into Victory) have any validity today.
"The rush to form special forces arose from confused thinking on what were, or were not, normal operations of war." "This cult of special forces is as sensible as to form a Royal Corps of Tree Fellers and say that no soldier, who does not wear its green hat with a bunch of oak leaves stuck in it, should be expected to climb a tree." Perhaps the next CDS will have his own ideas on the next 'specialist" infantry units; meanwhile, any suggestions? |

The badge reminds me of a similar badge used by the USAF, and not one I particularly like.

No I don't think it was 90% black.

it will be interesting to see just how long the old units are replaced by a new identity as the soldiers swap out for new 'Rangers' from other cap badges.
