Default Got any bullion?

Does anyone have any WWII period bullion-thread, cloth cap badges they could show. I'm interested in finding out anything I can about these so please post whatever you have, irrespective of unit.

Thanks in advance.

Default KLR bullion badge

Hello Kev, here is a beret badge worn by the 2nd Bn King's made for them in Italy in 1944, NOT therefore a professional UK made item. The actual purl on the letter N in this example is lost. It did have some verdigris on it when acquired and I flicked most of it off with a scalpel blade - otherwise I'm reluctant to do any further cleaning (despite your interesting experiments with vinegar !)
See PB's album for another example.
I hope this is of some use.

Ha, no I wouldn't use malt vinegar on a such a piece either as the metal thread might not be able to handle the acidity - the cleaned badge would undoubtably taste better though

I'll take a look at PB's album a little later.

Luc, is it safe to assume that the War Correspondant badge is British made?.

These badges must've been expensive to purchase even in wartime - I was looking at Tanja Berlin's website yesterday and was amazed at how labour intensive this type of embroidery is.

Please keep 'em coming guys, would love to see a few more.

Cheers,

Kev C.

I believe it to British made Kev, I've only seen it worn by British correspondents so I assume their Commonwealth colleagues wore different cap badges.

Are you after cap badges in particular, or bullion insignia in general?

Thanks Luc, I haven't come across many bullion cap badges but the quality of your war correspondant badge is of a standard I would expect to see from a British made piece.

Cap badges, here's a photo of a nice, bullion RAMC I saved a while ago - enjoy.

Great bullion thread Doug (pun intended), some really superb badges shown there - all very interesting for someone like myself who's a newbie to these.

I'd like to see a few more British-made badges if anyone can help?.

Thanks again all.

Having said that, I've a family connection to the KOYLI so thanks for showing. I think you're correct with the date, certainly looks Victorian period to me.

Cheers,

Kev C

It's a period item... maybe not military.

Two pictures... one of the bullion itself, the other showing the threads.

Enjoy.
