So this might be of interest (I'm not sure why exactly but a friend sent it to me and thinks its interesting)

That would be hat badge size and seems to have been made to be worn as such.

A thought, this badge may have been made/worn in the Pacific theatre during WW2. Some souvenir items were made of plastic or similar material.

This is not the first plastic NZ badge that I have come across.
Just as a thought, Onwards badges worn by all 2NZEF, I suspect made for home use.
