Default Unidentified African badge

This is believed to have originated from somewhere in Francophone Africa - the beret is clearly modelled on the French style military berets. Any ideas please?

Mike, it looks like a stylised antelope or springbok, so I'm wondering if it's somehow S.African, or E.African.

Didier,
Many thanks. Strange coincidence - I saw the beret at a collector's meeting yesterday and Chad of course is much in the news. Can you identify the cloth patch please? I'm assuming that it is French.

The cloth patch is for the 27e Division d'Infanterie Alpine, later called 27e Division d'Infanterie de Montagne.

If I remember correctly Robiin Hodges Indentified in in The Formation Sign as being a French artillery unit due to the red border

The Artillery unit of the 27 th Mountain Infantry Brigade (it's current designation) is the 93 rd Artillery (Mountain) Regiment, based in Varces (near Grenoble).

Of course - I was reading an article headlined "In Mali it's Chad not C-17s that matter"! Must pay more attention!

The French cloth insignia is worn on the sleeve. The red border is typical of artillery. It can be worn:

- Either by someone currently belonging to the 93 th (Mountain) Artillery Regiment of the 27 th BIA.
- Or by somone having belonged to the 93 th (Mountain) Artillery but temporarily posted to an other unit of this Brigade, or to the Brigade Staff.

The regimental metal badge of the 93 th (Mountain Artillery) Regiment is quite different. It is worn on chest, with a hanger (if on walking out dress) or pinned to the field jacket. See a picture of the current design here:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/93e_r%C...ie_de_montagne

The Beret badge is from Chad Armed Forces and has nothing to do with Mali.
