Can anybody please enlighten me as to what this badge is please.

It is the Royal Crest, like what you find above Courts, Ministry buildings and such (on a much smaller scale of vourse) could be it was on a case or pouch as it is cast, hopefully someone can elaborate further, all the best billy

Royal Arms , not Royal Crest which is Lion on Crown.

But what Billy says is correct for typical usage.
