Default Question on Formation Signs

I am just in the process of buying a ex WW2 Matchless 3GL motorcycle and I am having a problem identifying its Formation Signs.

Here are some details of the bike:

All markings appear to be original and probably date from 1943 to
post 1952

The C number is C4842901
On the nearside is a regimental insignia which is a black rectangle
with a red border in the centre is a red cross (with ends) and a red
crown in the centre
On the offside is the C numbers and beneath that is a black
rectangle with what appears to be "Military Motorcycle Museum"
painted on it.
Above this is a white rectangle with the writing: 48.DIV.PRO.COY
On the tank is the crest of the Royal Military Police with E II R on
it.

Any assistance will be greatfully appreciated
TIA
Ian

48.DIV.PRO.COY.
This is the abreviation for the Military Police Provost Company of the 48th Division.

Hi

I believe the formation sign to be by the discription you give as the 48th Div 2nd pattern in Military Police colours!

However, I could be wrong.

I think he means that the cross "thingy" was the 2nd pattern sign for 48th Infantry Division.

The 1st pattern, worn from 1940 was a parrot, actually a macaw, on a perch.

Hi Ian,

In answer to your question "Any idea when the second pattern came into effect?" I have the information that I have on it:

Army Badges and Insignia Since 1945 Book One. by Guido Rosignoli:The 48th. [South Midland] Division adopted a brand new formation sign when they were re-raised after the war as a T.A. Division.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Arthur
