unknown badge
hi all
i found this badge on ebay and although i didnt bid on it i thought it rather strange. ive never seen one like it, but there again im not a true brit collector BC |

Looks like an early KOYLI badge - King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry - but not sure of the date.

Up until opening Colin Churchills book on collar badges just now i would have put a considerable bet on this badge being a collar badge as this is what i have always considered this badge to be. However, you learn something every day! According to Colin Churchill this badge formed part of the shoulder title and was worn on tropical kit! The badge is pre 1881 so technically the title of the regiment would be 51st foot or The Kings Own Light Infantry regiment as it was not until after the 1881 Cardwell reforms that the regiments were territorialised and gained regional additions to their titles.
