South African (Boer) War 1899-1902
This display brought back for me many memories of many yrs ago - I recall viewing this display in the old museum on Sussex Drive when I was a teenager.
It fascinated me then & still does to this day - to think that this scarf was knitted by Queen Victoria & presented to a Canadian Private soldier to me is amazing. Why did he not receive the VC also? The Thompson scarf.......... Unfortunately the QSA medal in the display is not Thompson's, it is named to: 7339, PTE J.H. FINDLAY, R. CANDN: REGT. |

South African (Boer) War 1899-1902
Another well done display is that of Candian Nurse Miss Georgina Pope.
Her QSA medal is named: MISS G. POPE, NURSE Her British War & Victory medals are named: MATRON G.E. POPE She was awarded the Royal Red Cross 1st class for her services during the South African War. In 1899, she was chosen to head a group of nurses in South Africa during the Boer War. The nurses tended to sick or wounded soldiers in base hospitals. These hospitals were often not more than a hut or tent that could move along with the army and the nurses were on constant lookout for snakes and scorpions. Georgina returned to Canada in January 1901 but was sent for a second tour of duty in March 1902. The war ended in June 1902 and she returned home once again. In 1903, Georgina was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal for meritorious and distinguished service, the first Canadian to receive this esteemed honour. Back in Canada, she became Canada's first nursing matron in 1908, designing and administering training programs for military nurses. The Canadian army was the first in the world to give nurses officer status, equivalent to the rank of lieutenant. The nurses graduating from Georgina's courses profited from her hard work. At age 55, in poor health, Georgina went overseas in 1917 to work near Ypres, one of the bloodiest battlefields of the First World War, where more than one million soldiers were wounded or killed. Georgina returned to Canada in 1918 and died in Charlottetown in 1938. {In the last photo Georgina Pope is wearing the "Bluebird" military nursing uniform of the Canadian Army Medical Corps} Last edited by RCN; 23-09-12 at 09:25 PM. |

1WW - The Great war
Good representation of 1WW items on display at CWM. Not as much as the old museum but still pretty good. Unfortuntely little or no infomation on the recipients of the items on display.
So I'll post them in the order I took the photos, The VC's the largest representation for medals .... William Barker VC .. |

1 WW Great War (con't)
This display was really interesting - a First Nations (or First Peoples, a North American {no Canada in those days} pre Columbian native) Ojibwa soldier who had exemplary service, winning the MM (Military medal) & second & third award clasps.
I was so interested in this display, I think because I too am of First Nations descent, that I viewed it three times! Cpl Francis Pegahmagabow.......... |

Vimy Sculptures
I almost missed the room in which the artist's models Walter Allward created for the Vimy Memorial are located. There are 17 sculpture models held by the CWM, I have only taken a few of them to show here -
