Unusual Commando Badge
Evening Chaps
As some of you may know, I have a terrible habit of not being able to turn down 'a bit of a deal'. I have recently purchased the residual stock of a military tailors, including about 70,000, yes, 70,000, cloth patches! Amongst them were a few of the attached image, it has been suggested by one worthy [Yes, You Tim] that they may have been a private purchase item for Gulf War 2. Anyone able to confirm/shed more light? T Last edited by crest-insignia; 17-10-19 at 04:05 PM. Reason: typo |

No! But the same design exists in black and white on an odd colour green.
Anything worth having amongst the 70,000? Marc

Nah, mostly bog standard stuff, started putting a few ‘job lots’ on ‘you know where’. Still sorting through though, so you never know . . . .

I never saw anything like it floating around during my time in Iraq.
In the early days (2003-5) most of the RM and Army commandos wore the various OD badges on their desert kit. After mid 2005 or so black on desert khaki stuff started being issued there and in Afghan. I'm sure there are exceptions - I remember seeing several officers sporting desert coloured woolly pullys with full colour wings and desert/black daggers at HQ MND(SE) - but they were far from common. |

A few more ‘desert’ examples:

Nope. The only rig RN Cdos wear a dagger on (apart from the Bde flash) is 1 & 2 dress (blues and mess kit). They wear the RN Cdo rocker on 4s and combats.

Army Dress Regulations 2017 indicate that the ‘field service fighting knife’ or ‘dagger’ badge in red on dark blue is worn in perpetuity in all orders of dress except combat uniform on which the ARMY COMMANDO shoulder titles should be worn. However, before the shoulder title was introduced what was worn on combat uniform? In particular by qualified personnel who were not serving in 3 Commando Brigade?

Tim, prior to the army cdo badge, most guys would wear dagger only on shirts, jumpers etc, subdued dagger on smocks. Regards Mark

Mark,
Thanks. That explains the existence of ‘dagger’ badges in green subdued and desert dpm form as in post 6. Worn but probably not actually authorised? Tim

Tim, was never an issue putting subdued badges on smocks, all ranks did it, same with para wings, some would also cut off the sewn edges to make pressing easier. Regards Mark
