10th Hussars Tent Cap
Picked up this nice cap today amongst others,Badge is stamped S to the rear, Officers Initials inside.
Maker is Herbert Johnson the stamp has by Appt to the late King GV, can anyone help with an approximate date with the stamp- when this Mark was used? Thanks Paul Last edited by Paul Spellman; 05-08-16 at 03:53 PM. |

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the stamp but if that's the prince of Wales as the other stamp wouldn't it narrow the time period down to 1936 as after that he was the duke of Windsor and perhaps a while after that until a new stamp was made, so perhaps 1936-7.
Just my thoughts, Andy |

Thanks Andy,
That makes sense to me, the PoW plume on the stamp has a date which I think reads 1922 at the top and what looks like 1938 below but could be 1936? Paul |

As already stated, it dates to that period between the death of George V and the coronation of George VI, probably before Edward's short reign.

By coincidence another cap I picked up today to the 5th Inniskilling DG has the same stamp. Sorry the image isn't as clear it does have some wear too. |

You seem to have had a good day Paul, both a lovely caps. nice to see the clear dates in the first cap as my example of this Herbert Johnson makers stamp is somewhat blurred.
As perhaps of some relevance, this makers label from an Indian made officers FS cap for the RWF has the dates 1923 to 1936 for the PofW, again to the late King George V.

HI Chaps
This cap can only be from 1936 reason for this below George the 5th died on the 20 January 1936 and was berried on the 28 January 1936 upon his death the the prince of Wales ( Edward the VIII ) becomes the uncrowned king this for a minimum of one year with the coronation being in this case for him being the 12th May 1937 note the stamps that where produced this year did not shown a crown on his head or his brothers head until after the coronation .) When the price of Wales abdicated in December 1936 companies removed the price of Wales plum within days as he had left in disgrace and they just used the late gorge the 6th appointment as there was no prince of wales as Gorge VI did not become prince of wales which is the title bestowed on kings in waiting and princess of wales for queens in waiting caps or items with ether of these appointments can be dated very clearly to this year . Very nice caps I will dig out my example later steve
