Thank you all, the letters are sewn on and I will post a copy of the back.
During the start of the 2WW there was an explosion in specialisations in gunnery etc, hence many badges started to appear with letters underneath the basic design, many had the additional letters sewn on. Maybe a one off rating doing a one off job who made up his own badge from suitable letters available, however, of all the additional letters available to him, CP does not exist as a grouped pair only as individual letters! |

Hi All
I have look back through some of my older books of the Royal Navy from around the 1st World War and found the following 1. About 1894 there was a new type of boats built for the Royal Navy of the "TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER". These were use to protect the fleet against enemy torpedo boats. Later they were used for Convoy Protection and Coastal Protection. Both of these could account for the "CP" lettering on the badge. 2. There was also a branch around at that time of "TORPEDO LIEUTENANT's WRITER". I have been unable to find a picture on their badge as of yet, but I'm still looking. This may account for the "W" under the torpedo. I will still carry on researching as I have been unable to find any badge of single torpedo with a crown above as most crowns are above crossed torpedoes. Regards Ian

Hi All
More scans of the badge. The W / CP are both crudely hand embroidered. Any other suggestions? maybe funny ones to have us all in stitches!!!!!!!! |

Trained operator, Visual Signalman but what is the L for? Electrical? or Wireman? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Barry Last edited by nbroadarrowz; 11-12-20 at 02:50 AM. Reason: spelling |

1. Original photo of badge. 2. 'W' replaced with one from 'writer' badge. 3. Controlled Mining badge overlaid , to show how it could have been used as basis/template for 'CP'. The badge definitely looks like it was quickly 'cobbled together' in the field , a tailor (or wife/girlfriend ) would have done a more professional job. .
