RE 286705- on wash roll and straight razor.
Any way to find out more on this individual or his Engineer unit? Regards, Paul.

I cannot find a medal index card for a Royal Engineer with this service number or for several numbers either side. The closest is this one (286702) who enlisted in March 1916.
There is a card for 286701 and 206700 but not for 206703, 206704 or 206706. Last edited by High Wood; 25-08-20 at 08:38 PM. |

Thank you Simon. That's something. Good chance of enlisting around that time. Regards, Paul.

286700 states 578 Sussex Works Company and oddly enough has an enlistment date of 08/06/1917. If this service number sequence was issued to a home service unit it would explain the lack of Medal Index Cards. The two that I have listed are, strictly speaking, Silver War Badge entitlement cards.

Hello Simon. A name that looks a fit has been found on the GWF. https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/...omment-2927129 Regards, Paul.

I would be cautious about the attribution as the the numbers that I found were in a numerical sequence without the WR prefix. As you can see from Harold Lewis's medal index card his original number was 290622 and WR/286705 was the new number that he was issued. I am not sure if he would have been given a completely new set of kit because his number had changed, it is possible but unlikely.
286705 and WR/286705 are two completely different numbers. |

Here is an example of two soldiers in the R.E. with the same number but only one has the WR prefix.

Thanks Simon. Point well made. I had felt uneasy with the WR prefix. Regards, Paul.
