This may not be much help at all, but the 21st Indian Division, WWII, used a buffalo head emblem. Perhaps a later sub-unit of this formation? Perhaps even in the post-1947 independant Indian Army, which kept a lot of the traditions and insignia of its British predecessor.
Or I may be barking up the wrong tree altogether. |

Possible connection to 32 Battalion (South Africa) :
"32 Battalion (sometimes nicknamed Buffalo Battalion or Portuguese: Os TerrÃveis for The Terrible Ones) was a light infantry battalion of the South African Army founded in 1975" THE TERRIBLE ONES: SOUTH AFRICA’S 32 BATTALION .
