Default Army Remount badge

This looks ok to me except for the slider. But is it genuine?

Afraid not - the horse's head is a give away of the repro ones with those goggly eyes. Lots on ebay.

I have just got this one.

The badge is flat backed which is why it is unusual. It came with a very interesting mix of genuine WW1 badges, buttons and patches and matches the ones sold by Bosleys..

This is a fake one from ebay. There are noticable differences if only with the length and shape of the sldier.

This one is what I consider to be genuine. There is a third version with a different design in a single metal but I don't have an example to show yet.

Alan. Is this the third design you refer to? I've had this for some time. I've always regarded this as a fake, but you don't see many about so I don't know. The 'slider' is thin and more like a blade you would find on an officer's badge.

Andy,

The badge is flat backed which is why it is unusual. I would be more suspicious of it but it does not match the usual fake and came with a very interesting mix of genuine WW1 badges, buttons and patches.

Re your question above - I have what I believe is a genuine badge. The back is exactly the same as yours in the photo - flat backed with an elongated oval dimple half way down the badge back (almost hidden by the slider in your photo). Excellent detail on the front and differs from the common fakes.

I have not sent a photo as its exactly the same. Genuine IMO.

Hi, can someone give me either a thumbs up or down on the ARS. Had it for time, but looking to weed out any iffy one's to keep my hit list up to date. I think this in reference to Alan's note above had the goggle eye's seen on fakes. But it has what looks like to me the gold coloured solder seen on supposedly good one's.

Thanks

Simon.

Hi Simon and others,
I can't comment on your badge, sorry, but here are mine for comparison. I'm hoping they are OK.
Cheers, Tinto

I recently acquired an Army Remount Service badge and after reading this thread decided it must be a fake. The prancing horse does not protrude from the oval frame and the quality of design is somewhat lacking compared to Malcs. Most notably the eye and the prominent muscle in the forearm area. Also the slider seemed to be a fraction short.

After checking Doyle & Foster (p121) I noticed the badge they had photographed looked exactly like mine. Slightly bulbous eye, prominent forearm muscle and shorter slider. Apart from being unable to determine if the horse protrudes from the frame the badges look identical. Perhaps there's hope for my badge yet?

There must have been several dies for both parts of the badge so don't assume yours isn't right. More examples please!

The first solid backed badge may be right. The all brass crossed whips one has a similiar construction and they were a big corps after all. I would keep it. Joachim's is a very good example as well.

However the goggle eyed monstrosity in the album is from a die used by well known repro sellers on ebay.
