Boer war military type badge ?
Hello folks.
Got this recently in a lot of very early button badges depicting Queen Victoria. I think it may be Kitchener or Roberts depicted on the centre piece and looking at the construction it appears the centrepieces could be changed quite easily. Does anyone have any ideas as to its original purpose or could anyone give me some pointers to an avenue of research i could undertake T.I.A IMG_20190516_114058.jpg IMG_20190516_114048.jpg |

Kitchener I would say. I can’t see any fittings on it (albeit the pic is very dark) to suggest it was for wear on something so is likely a commemorative item IMO.
Although the centre plate no doubt can be removed I’d suggest that was simply the method of construction and that it wasn’t meant to be - personally I wouldn’t try bending back 100 year old metal tangs as there’s a chance they’ll snap. |

I'd also say Kitchener. It looks like a Boer War souvenir - the design includes not only the UK floral emblems (rose, thistle, shamrock) but colonial emblems such as a kangaroo and an elephant.

Thank you for the prompt response
Heres some hopefully better pictures...i never usually use my phone camera and it shows ! I have managed to identify all of the others except the nautical pennant (which i assume was a patriotic device ?) and the beardy gentleman i have an idea ive seen the picture before in the not too distant past so i should be able to track him down IMG_20190516_132956.jpg IMG_20190516_132950.jpg IMG_20190516_132740.jpg And i have only just noticed after reviewing my post that underneath Mr Centre gentleman is what appears to be "WH & GW & CO"...manufacturer perhaps ? Also matey boy on the plate is clearly wearing military uniform and has an medals and orders visible which match this well know portraits of Lord Kitchener. The iconography around the portrait suggest Great Britain and Empire (Australian, Canada, India and Africa)... I don’t see how that connects with William Booth. As mentioned in post #3 it does link to Boer war, as does Kitchener. I don’t wonder if it’s just a case of a poor artists impression like the infamous Cristiano Ronaldo bronze. |

Looking at the animals shown on the bottom badge Id say that it has some relation to the Kings Colonials as the 4 Squadron badges have a kangaroo, elephant, beaver and an ostrich. Id say that the military gent in the middle is in fact Lord Kitchener. Whilst I have never seen any thing like it there were a large number of commemorative badges made following the Boer War.
