I agree. C could be Celtic.
The Star of the Order of the Thistle makes it a Scottish button.

Like most of my unknowns the information one can gather from the button itself is not enough for finding an ID on the web.

No. 86 has been identified in the Newsletter of the International Uniform Buttons Collectors Club as St. George's English Rifle Regiment, Australian Army. Would be glad of confirmation though as I also have one of these.

What is the number of the issue?

Searching for the Nairn Club I landed on the National Library of Scotland's Scottish Post Office Directories
https://digital.nls.uk/directories/b...ced_search=yes

The chapter with Edinburgh clubs (1898/1899) gave me two entries:
- new club, 8-5 princes street, established 1787
- northern club, 91 george street, now the Royal Northern Club, founded 1854.
Both are contenters for this button.
The backmark is in a wide range: 1845-1907.
As you wrote: 'more speculation'.
